Super Gemma! http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=3145&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=super-gemma http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=3145#comments Tue, 03 Dec 2013 10:00:24 +0000 http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=3145 Whitakers Chocolates employee Gemma Towell is one of those people that you simply have to raise your hat to.

Surrounded by family and friends suffering from or losing their lives to cancer, in January 2013 Gemma decided that it would be far more effective to do something about it.

So, she set herself the challenge of covering an incredible 5,000 miles on foot and by bike before Christmas to raise money for Cancer Research.

By May 2013 Gemma had already cycled and 2,286 miles and then rode the Leeds/Liverpool canal, took part in the Sheffield Man of Steel competition, and to cap it all, in September took on the Tough Mudder 10-12 mile marines assault course at Broughton Hall.

Sadly during the challenge, she lost two friends which made her even more determined to achieve her goal and despite the set-backs, Gemma never stopped smiling throughout.

On November 18th 2013, during her commute into work, Gemma passed the 5,000 mile mark and was greeted by William Whitaker, Whitakers MD as she arrived.

In total, Gemma raised a staggering £2,300 and in recognition of her achievement, Whitakers Chocolates matched the amount and presenting her with a cheque for an additional £2,300.

MD William Whitaker said “Gemma has been an inspiration to everyone at Whitakers Chocolates during her mammoth year long cycle and fundraising campaign. In all weather conditions she’s stuck to her ambition and in the process has raised money for a charity that ultimately will help others. We are all proud of you Gemma … well done !”

Perfect Pint http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=3134&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=perfect-pint http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=3134#comments Mon, 11 Nov 2013 10:44:40 +0000 http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=3134 Released to the beer trade today, Copper Dragon’s Cocoa Stout is as the name suggest, a traditional stout ale brewed with premium Whitakers Chocolate.

Chocolate and beer as odd as it sounds, go together perfectly. Many brewers have produced chocolate based stouts but use colouring and flavourings to give the effect. In this case, Snaygill neighbours have used the real thing and the end result is simply stunning.

A select few were invited to the brewery last Friday for a sneak preview including Whitakers MD, Willam Whitaker who gave the special ale a big thumbs up.

Chocolates & Beer! http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=3130&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=chocolates-beer http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=3130#comments Fri, 08 Nov 2013 12:19:22 +0000 http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=3130 Whitakers Chocolates and Snaygill neighbours, Copper Dragon brewery, have shared ingredients and skills to produce a one-off real chocolate ale in celebration of Whitakers 125 year anniversary.

Cocoa Stout is probably one of the most complicated brews ever attempted by the brewery and promises to be incredibly smooth with hints of coffee, chocolate and vanilla, perfectly complimented by a background of English hops.. with an ABV 4.5%, it’s guaranteed to put a smile on any beer lover’s face.

Pictured respective managing directors, William Whitaker and Steve Taylor add the chocolate nibs into the brew kettle where the chocolate magic will happen!

Cocoa stout is a strictly one-off brew and demonstrates the skill and creative abilities of both companies.

Everyone baked and contributed their own sweet delights (Mary Berry would have been proud!) and they managed to raise an incredible £168.50 for the worthwhile cause.

Thank all those who popped in a bought a cake and gave so generously.

It was an amazing effort by all in particular from our own super-girl, Gemma Towell who took fourth place in the overall competition in a blistering time of only 22 minutes.

“The weather held out and everyone was in high spirits. We were all spurred on by our friend and colleague Tina who joined us and cheering us across the finish line. Tina is currently still undergoing treatment for Breast Cancer and although she couldn’t join in this year will definitely be skipping round the course with us next year. Everyone was amazing and it was such an emotional day.”

Well done Gemma! http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=3041&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=well-done-gemma http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=3041#comments Wed, 29 May 2013 15:04:25 +0000 http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=3041 Despite the horrendous weather and total lack of summer, Whitakers Gemma Towell continues on her quest to cycle 5,000 in 12 months to raise valuable cash for cancer research. This is her latest progress update:

So far I’ve cycled 2,286 mile and climbed 88,741ft, which is the equivalent of Lands End to john o groats to lands end in miles and 3 times up Mount Everest in feet! I am currently about 200 miles ahead of my year to date target.

I’m cycling Liverpool/Leeds canal in 2 weeks, 130 miles in 2 weeks and have signed up for the Sheffield Man of Steel in July and the Tough Mudder 10 – 12 mile marines assault course at Broughton hall in September!!!

The picture featured  is me cycling Scarborough to Whitby and back.

“Lad” in a Chocolate Shop! http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=2951&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=chocolates-champagne http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=2951#comments Tue, 02 Apr 2013 15:28:09 +0000 http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=2951 Who needs Leicester Square when you’ve got cobbles, snow and a chocolate shop full of champagne!

Headline Sponsors Whitakers Chocolates, were delighted to welcome the cast and crew of film “Lad – A Yorkshire Story” to their Skipton shop for a pre-premiere champagne reception.

Glasses full of champagne and delicious Whitakers chocolates on hand, the party went incredibly well (unlike the Yorkshire weather outside) and it was an excellent opportunity to meet the cast first-hand.

Written, produced and directed by local Austwick lad Dan Hartley, the film was shot in a variety of Yorkshire locations and tells the story of a young “Lad” who loses his father (and subsequent direction) and is taken under the wing of the local park ranger with happy and sad consequences.

Whitakers have always supported anything Yorkshire and to see the Dales scenery presented in such a dramatic way made their involvement an obvious choice.

The premiere itself was held just down the road at the Skipton Plaza where the red carpet was rolled out and the cinema packed ready to play to an eagerly anticipating audience.

The billing didn’t let it down and the film showcased the dramatic scenery of the Yorkshire Dales magnificently and combined with truly heart-warming story, the premiere was a total success.

The Choccy Chicks! http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=2675&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-choccy-chicks http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=2675#comments Wed, 06 Mar 2013 12:15:28 +0000 http://www.whitakerschocolates.com/?p=2675 A team of 15 strong “Choccy Chicks” (Whitakers female staff) are taking part in the 2013 Race for Life (Burnley Townley Park, 16th June) to raise valuable funds for Cancer Research.

Their motivation? Last year, they lost a very good friend to breast cancer and now they have a work colleague (and dear friend) who is battling against the disease. Rather than get upset about it, they’ve decided to do something and try to raise as much money as they can to help ‘ kick its ass’ !!

“We may run, walk, skip or dance round, who knows, but one thing we know is that it will be a fun day out for everyone involved and it’s a great way to remember those who we have lost to cancer.” clucked Chief “Chick” Alison (Whitakers Factory Manager).

The company has kindly agreed to contribute 50p towards any pound raised by the girls and everyone else’s support would be gratefully appreciated.

Every penny counts so if you’re can spare a few, please click here to support the girls’ efforts.
